28th June, 2020 - Difference Between Serif and Sans-serif Fonts

via W3Schools.

Serif vs. Sans-serif

  • CSS Font Families

In CSS, there are two types of font family names:

    • generic family - a group of font families with a similar look (like "Serif" or "Monospace")
    • font family - a specific font family (like "Times New Roman" or "Arial")
    Generic family Font family Description
    Serif Times New Roman
Serif fonts have small lines at the ends on some characters
    Sans-serif Arial
"Sans" means without - these fonts do not have the lines at the ends of characters
    Monospace Courier New
    Lucida Console
All monospace characters have the same width

Note: On computer screens, sans-serif fonts are considered easier to read than serif fonts.

    Font Family

The font family of a text is set with the font-family property.

The font-family property should hold several font names as a "fallback" system. If the browser does not support the first font, it tries the next font, and so on.

Start with the font you want, and end with a generic family, to let the browser pick a similar font in the generic family, if no other fonts are available.

Note: If the name of a font family is more than one word, it must be in quotation marks, like: "Times New Roman".

  • 23rd June, 2020 - A lovely present

I woke up to the best delivery this morning - a box full of Japanese tasty treats! The best part is, I have no idea of what most of them are!

I've scoffed into quite a few of the candies. Something tells me I will have them for months to come!

Nothing is better than wearing a freshly cleaned pajama top with a spritz of Ariana Grande's cloud perfume. sigh

19th June, 2020 - Writing for the web

Writing for the web has evolved and been refined over the years, from the user posting endless 'thought process' paragraphs of content to an art form.

What are some of these elements?

  • a concise and simple writing style
  • short sentences with one or two clauses - Readability statistics can help here;
  • plain English rather than complex words;
  • active, rather than passive voice.

  • 'Writing for the Web', Monash University
In fact, there's an A-Z of better web writing.

So, how do internet users read on the web?

    Summary: They don't.

People rarely read Web pages word by word; instead, they scan the page, picking out individual words and sentences.

    So, what happened to us?

Ansel from Baldora Station puts it quite succinctly:

You stopped checking forums and posting on them. You stopped visiting the blogs in your bookmarks. You stopped making your own websites, stopped sitting down to think and write, and you started crafting digestible Facebook posts and Twitter tweets with the hashtags you thought would boost 'user engagement' (what the hell does that mean?) the most. You stopped surfing the World Wide Web, and started being the bitch on booty-call for the Notifications counter.
Bolding for effect. We all did become bitches of the sweet sonnet of the Notifications tab.

This new default social-media position is terrible, but what it has likely done is force us all to become more well-rounded writers by contemplating our thoughts (most of us) and smashing down this complex nebula to less than 255 characters. It's a challenge I'm willing to accept as a student whose sole focus is brevity of language and consice thought.

We've likely lost the unsurmountable depth and romance of the old school, but we've gained so much in terms of communication as a whole. It's unlikely that the average person wants to sit reading large chunks of text for an hour - as a law student, I say that with tongue in cheek. By the way, well done if you've read this entire post. Congraulations, you are the 1%.
